The Dark Data of Policing

Dean Knox, assistant professor of operations, information and decisions at The Wharton School, was named the winner of the 2021 NOMIS & Science Young Explorer Award. His prize-winning essay illustrates the importance of applying new tools and statistical techniques to imperfect data to reveal the extent and severity of racial bias in policing. He joined Wharton Business Daily to discuss the value of examining inconsistent record-keeping and analyzing incomplete data – or “dark data” – in order to effectively address racial disparities in law enforcement.
