COVID-19 Impact on Counties with Different Social-Economical Characteristics with Katherine Lin
The COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge effect on people’s lives, with varying severity based on different characteristics between populations. We explore the relationship between the COVID-19 death rate in US counties and their socioeconomic characteristics. Our data confirm the observations made in media reports that the pandemic has a bigger impact on older populations, populations with higher percentages of black and Hispanic people, and populations with lower income. We use statistical machine learning methods to predict county death rate based on the socioeconomic characteristics of the county, and compare the methods based on test data prediction accuracy. The results of these prediction methods can provide valuable guidance on issues such as resource allocation in the future.
